Trym's Drumming Tips

Kindly submitted to Gravequake by Trym on January 14, 1999 C.E.

Biography

I got my first drum set when I was around 12. But I did not have any idea of how to play them. At that time I was totally into KISS. So I watched all the Kiss videos I could find and looked at how he was playing and how the drum set was standing.

After a while I could play the beats on most of the Kiss songs. With a walkman I put on a tape and tried to play along with the tape. At that time Slayer was my main influence.

So when I was around 14 I met Ivar of Enslaved. We played together for a while, and after some years Enslaved was formed. As you know Enslaved`s music is quite similar to black metal, so there was not any sudden change for me to start playing black metal, it took many years to get to that level. I played also just for a short time with Gehenna, and that was a positive experience. In the time between Enslaved and Emperor I also played with some friends just to keep up the practice.

Emperor

We have recorded a new album called: "IX-Equlibrium." It has 8 new tracks. But it's not like "In the nightside..." or "Anthems...".

I don't know how people will react to this album. We have tried to get a clearer sound on this album, because there are so many details that is missing on the other albums. I was also able to be in the studio and do the drum sound on this album.

During the time I have played with Emperor, we have become better musicians, and also plays better together. So I must say that we are working very good together.

Drumming Technique

When it comes to drumming technique, I think each drummer must find out what is the best way to play for himself. I have spoken to many other drummers, and seen how they are playing, but everyone have there own style, no matters who they are influenced by.

The thing is to find a way to play both fast and technical at the same time without being to tired to play. Try to adjust the drum set so it's easiest as possible to play.

The sound depends on the drum set. New heads sounds better. I also prefer cymbals with bright and clear sound. I don't use any crash cymbals bigger than 15 inches. For those who are just about to start playing, you should contact other drummers and learn from them the basic drum beats.

Success in the Music Industry

It's very hard to try to find out new things for drummers. But one should never be afraid to do mistakes or things that might sound stupid. But the most important thing is rehearsing. Listen to drummers you like and copy what they are playing, and then try to do your own tricks in different combinations.
